Flowers and heart-shaped candy are Valentine’s Day gift clichés. A purring, twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow is wonderfully strange Valentine’s Day gift.
I gave Jen the purring, twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow.
I found the thing at a Superior, Wis. thrift store. It must have been a recent donation. The purring, twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow was sitting on the front counter with a $5 price tag. It hadn’t even hit the floor yet. No one knew where to put it.
“What is this thing?” I asked.
“Ya, look at that,” said the lady behind the cash register. “Press down on it.”
I put my hand over the plush, black surface – actually the backs of the twin cats – and pressed down.
“Buuuuuuuuuuuuu”
The purring, twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow motor hummed like a swarm of bees trapped inside a shoebox. Muted and maybe a little bit dangerous. The vibration was startling at first.
“Ha,” I said. “That’s crazy….I’ll take it.”
Frankly, the twin-kitty, foot pillow was a sure-fire Jen present without the motorized effects. I knew a foot pillow with a couple of goofy cats sitting side-by-side would get a big smile. Throw in the touch-sensitive “purring” feature and I couldn’t wait for her November birthday. The purring, twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow would be a gift on the next available holiday.
That meant Valentine’s Day.
Of course, the wonderfully strange gift got a big a laugh. I knew it would.
Jen put her feet in the twin-kitty heads and pressed down.
“Buuuuuuuuuuuu”
“It’s almost too much,” she said.
I agreed. The foot vibration first surprises, then pleases, then quickly turns annoying before it reaches a shut-that-dam-thing-off moment. It’s like a foot massage gone wild.
Jen found a zipper on the bottom of the thing and pulled out a battery operated “purring” motor. She set it aside. Then she put her feet back in the twin-kitty heads. No buzz. No hum. Just a twin-kitty, stuffed foot pillow and a big Jen smile.
Much better than flowers and candy.
This is a great story! So glad Jen liked it. Perhaps she’ll try the purring again later.
